what are volcanos and how are they formed? A volcano is like a vent, or opening, in the earth's crust where melted rock better known as molten rock called magma is ejected. We also use the word "volcano" to describe the mountain that is built up by the molten rock and ashes. The temperature deep inside the earth is very hot, so hot it will melt rock into a super-really-hot liquid which is called magma. and It also builds up a lot of pressure. the built up pressure pushes the magma, along with gases and steam, which goes up through openings in the earth's crust.
